TANAGER SONG FARM

___________________________________________________________________________

At the original Tanager Song Farm, I created an idyllic homestead with the luxury of electricity, central heat and A/C, and a few other modern conveniences. During those nine years, I raised a cow, a flock of 20 sheep, a herd of 40+ goats, a buncha chickens, ducks, geese, hundreds of rabbits, and six wonderful children. We produced our own organic meat, canned hundreds of quarts of produce each year, and learned various homesteading crafts.

We indulged our curiosity about old homesteading crafts and found that while we enjoyed some, others were way too much work. It really made us appreciate the modern conveniences! Even though I no longer have the sheep, I have stockpiled enough fleece and fiber to last me a lifetime. The only activities that could not be transported to our new home were the animals and plants. My two youngest daughters still participate in the living history activities that we have pursued for the last 13 years.

In our current rental we are not allowed any animals or gardening. Meanwhile, I am keeping the dream of a new farm as a goal for the future. My dream of owning another small farm and growing heirloom plants with a few animals will have to wait one more year before it can be pursued. We are getting closer to our dream as I continue with classes. If all goes according to plan, I will soon be able to look for property that lets me grow my beloved heirloom vegetables.
